From November 13–15, 2024, the 30th Annual Conference of the International Society for Mechanical Circulatory Support (ISMCS) was held in Utsunomiya, Japan, bringing together global leaders in mechanical circulatory support (MCS) to share advances in science, engineering, and clinical practice.
magAssist participated as an emerging innovator in the MCS field, presenting recent developments across its product pipeline—including updates on its percutaneous ventricular assist device (pVAD) NyokAssist® and its fully magnetically levitated extracorporeal system MoyoAssist® .
Driving Innovation in MCS
Dr. Po-Lin Hsu and Dr. Chiahao Hsu of magAssist delivered four presentations at the conference, covering the company's R&D progress, preclinical and clinical insights, and new perspectives on next-generation cardiac support.
In addition, Dr. Chiahao Hsu chaired the “What's New? From Laboratory and Company” session, facilitating technical discussion between researchers, clinicians, and device developers on the future of MCS technologies.
About ISMCS
The International Society for Mechanical Circulatory Support (ISMCS) is a leading global academic organization dedicated to innovation and collaboration in mechanical circulatory support. Formerly known as the International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps (ISRBP), the organization was renamed in 2016 to reflect its expanding scope. Its members have played key roles in the development and clinical application of nearly all major MCS technologies, including VADs, Impella®, and ECMO systems.
NyokAssist® pVAD: Early Clinical Success
Co-developed by Zhongshan Hospital (Fudan University) and magAssist, NyokAssist® is a minimally invasive percutaneous ventricular assist device designed to provide short-term circulatory support during high-risk PCI and other complex cardiac procedures.
In preclinical studies, NyokAssist® demonstrated smooth aortic arch navigation, strong hemodynamic performance, and reduced myocardial workload. A prospective, multicenter randomized controlled trial comparing NyokAssist® to intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) in HRPCI patients showed faster deployment, minimal trauma, quicker recovery, and no major adverse events.
MoyoAssist® : Fully Magnetically Levitated Support
MoyoAssist®, developed in collaboration with Wuhan Union Hospital, is a fully magnetically levitated extracorporeal ventricular assist device. The system eliminates mechanical friction, significantly reducing hemolysis and improving hemocompatibility—offering safe and stable mid- to long-term support for patients in acute heart failure. Hands-On Exchange and Global Collaboration
magAssist's booth at ISMCS 2024 drew strong engagement from clinicians and engineers alike, serving as a space for hands-on demonstrations and in-depth discussions on next-generation pump designs, deployment strategies, and clinical pathways.
Looking Ahead: ISMCS 2026 to Be Held in China
In a major milestone for the global MCS community, ISMCS announced that its 2026 annual meeting will take place in Suzhou, China—the first time the conference will be hosted in the country.
Dr. Po-Lin Hsu, magAssist's representative and the only ISMCS Council member from China, played a key role in bringing the event to Suzhou. This milestone reflects the increasing contribution of Chinese innovators to global cardiovascular science and technology.
